SUMMARY:HEAS Workshop: New Methodologies and Perspectives in Palaeolithic Archaeofauna
DESCRIPTION:Archaeofaunal analysis is one of the most relevant and dynamic fields in Palaeolithic research. Over the last decades\, the discipline has undergone profound transformations driven by methodological innovations and the integration of biomolecular approaches. These advances have expanded archaeofaunal studies beyond traditional taxonomic and taphonomic analyses\, enabling researchers to address broader questions related to subsistence strategies\, mobility\, symbolism\, culinary practices\, and human–animal relationships. This workshop aims to bring together researchers working at the interface of archaeology\, biology\, and the humanities to explore how emerging methods are reshaping the study of archaeological fauna. A central goal of the symposium is to promote interdisciplinary dialogue and methodological integration\, fostering collaboration across different analytical traditions and career stages. The workshop will consist of a full-day session combining invited lectures and a hands-on exercise. The morning will feature five thematic lectures highlighting interdisciplinary approaches to archaeofaunal research. In the afternoon\, participants will engage in a practical exercise designed to encourage methodological cross-fertilization and critical discussion. \n  \nSpeakers: \n  \n\nOlivia Rivero: University of Salamanca\n\n  \n\nAna Belén Marin Arroyo: University of Cantabria\n\n  \n\nShevan Wilkin: University of Basel\n\n  \n\nAlex Pryor: University of Exeter\n\n  \n\nAnna Wagner: University of Reading\n\n  \n\nPere Gelabert: University of Vienna\n\n  \n\nMarjolein D. SUMMARY:HEAS Workshop at the NHM Wien
DESCRIPTION:Museum-driven research and preservation strategies of heritage objects with nuclear analytical techniques \nThe purpose of this event is to bring together scientists of various disciplines\, and career stages\, who engage with the research and preservation of heritage objects to provoke an artefact-based discussion on analytical methods. Nuclear analytical techniques in their broadest sense embrace XRF techniques\, ion beam analysis\, radiocarbon dating\, MicroCT imaging\, synchrotron-based techniques\, neutron imaging\, neutron radiography and Neutron Activation Analysis – as well as complementary techniques.\nThere will be presentations of case studies on archaeological material which will illustrate the research approaches\, work-flows and results. We aim to have productive discussions on the refinement of methods for more minimal-invasive and non-invasive ones that serve for the protection of cultural heritage objects. \nTarget Audience\nThe event is intended for museum professionals\, conservators\, archaeologists\, heritage scientists\, and researchers from the physical and material sciences involved in the analysis and preservation of cultural heritage. The workshop is addressed both to young and experienced specialists working in relevant fields. A special emphasis will be given to support young researchers to present their research topics\, doctoral thesis etc. that include application of nuclear technology on archaeological artifacts in a poster session. \nExpected Outputs\n• Review existing research workflows and integrate complementary analytical techniques through the discussion of case studies and methodological advances;\n• Propose and assess best practices in the analytical investigations of heritage objects (with focus on archaeological artefacts);\n• Advancement and refinement of minimally invasive and non-invasive analytical approaches for cultural heritage studies;\n• Development of recommendations for the responsible application of nuclear analytical techniques in museum contexts;\n• Promotion of new interdisciplinary collaborations and the initiation of future research activities;\n• Strengthening the role of museums as active partners in heritage science. \n  \n  \n  \nRegistration will open in Mid-September\, but you can register your interest in attending here: \n  \nRegister your interest in attending here \n  \nSave the date_Flyer.pdf

SUMMARY:HEAS Workshop at the NHM on Mind over matter - The Materiality of Anthropomorphic Figurines
DESCRIPTION:This workshop examines the materiality\, production\, and cultural significance of prehistoric human figurines\, with particular attention to the Upper Palaeolithic „Venus“ figures. Among the earliest known depictions of the human body\, these objects were crafted from diverse materials including stone\, bone\, antler\, mammoth ivory\, and early ceramics.\nAnthropomorphic figurines from later periods likewise display a wide range of materials and styles. How do different substances influence the figurines‘ morphology and manufacturing techniques?\nWhat does material choice reveal about the intentions\, skills\, lifetimes\, and possibly worldviews and lived realities of their creators? And how do these figurines continue to inspire artists today? \nMarking the centenary of the Venus II figurine’s discovery at Willendorf in 1926\, this workshop explores how materials shape the form\, meaning\, and cultural and museological biographies of figurative art objects. By bringing together archaeologists\, artists\, and artisans\, we seek fresh insights into how material choice shaped these figurines‘ forms\, meanings\, and cultural trajectories.\nWe aim to\n– Foster cross-disciplinary exchange between researchers and artisans.\n– Investigate figurines as both archaeological artefacts and as products of imagination.\n– Reflect on how prehistoric body depictions evolved over time and continue to inform contemporary understandings of humanity\, gender\, and ancestry.\n– Generate new artistic and scholarly perspectives through discussion\, hands-on exploration\, and creative collaboration. \n  \nRegister here.
